New Champions 5050 creates and amplifies movements for gender equality and empowering women and girls.
We amplify and help scale movements that promote gender equality and empower women and girls, starting with these movements led by Young Global Leaders and New Champions:
- Gender Equality Month (March 2017)
- YGLs for Global Goals for Sustainable Development
- Global Dignity Day
Gender Equality Month
This month of March 2017 – in celebration of the Inaugural Gender Equality Month (GEM) – we invite action and demonstration of commitments by the New Champions 5050 community starting with Young Global Leaders, Global Shapers, Schwab Social Entrepreneurs, Tech Pioneers, Young Scientists, and members of the World Economic Forum community, and including the world.
March is traditionally celebrated as Women’s History Month in the United States, and March 8 as International Women’s Day.
This year, we will shift focus from history towards creating a future of equality. Thus, Gender Equality Month (GEM) is about inspiring and mobilizing everyone at all levels of society to take action, support initiatives, and advocate for policies that promote gender equality and that empower women and girls. GEM is initiated by Young Global Leader Analisa Leonor Balares and organized by the Womensphere Foundation, in partnership with academic institutions, companies, student organizations, NGOs, community organizations, and civil society organizations globally.
YGLs for Global Goals for Sustainable Development
New Champions 5050 will be actively involved and participating in the YGLs for the Global Goals for Sustainable Development - an initiative of the Young Global Leaders Community, and “a group of restless and passionate optimists across the globe who are dedicated to enabling change through the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
“We started this initiative because we realized that hundreds of YGLs were already working – directly or indirectly – toward the achievement of the SDGs. Some are supporting the Global Goals through their profession, others have dedicated personal time to further societal or environmental causes. Either way, we realized that we would be stronger together – connecting via our networks, amplifying other YGL programs, filling gaps.”

#PhoenixRisen is a collective movement to combat sexual assault and sexual violence against women and girls launched at the New Champions 5050 Session at the 2016 Young Global Leaders Annual Summit in Japan. #PhoenixRisen is founded by Young Global Leader Peggy Liu (Chairperson, JUCCCE) and managed by Global Shaper Stephany Zoo (China Marketing Lead, SAP).
PhoenixRisen goes beyond recounting to empowering ourselves and others with actionable tips to fight back against sexual assault. Both women and men can share their tips and stories of sexual assault. As shared by Founder Peggy Liu: "Sexual assault doesn't belong anywhere. In any society. In any country. If we don't eradicate this type of social norm, women have NO CHANCE of gender parity, much less basic dignity. #PhoenixRisen is a collective action against sexual assault.“
#Global Dignity Day
Global Dignity Day is a Young Global Leaders initiative to educate and inspire young people and help them to understand their self-worth and goals. Founded in 2008 by Young Global Leaders Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, John Hope Bryant, and Pekka Himanen, Global Dignity Day is now celebrated all around the world.
Global Dignity Day takes place in schools on the third Wednesday of October each year. It is carried out in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Americas. Thousands of volunteers act as guides and facilitators, leading the students in a conversation about dignity. The aim is to make the concept of dignity tangible and understandable for each and every student. Defining dignity in their own words and sharing stories from their own lives gives students ownership of the concept. The facilitators lead the discussion on the Dignity Principles and are the first to tell their stories. After that, the students share their own stories, initially in small groups and ultimately in front of the whole class. At the end of the day, selected students from each class recount their dignity stories to the rest of their peers in the plenary gathering.
This year, New Champions 5050 will support Global Dignity Day through inspiring and organizing events upholding the dignity of women and girls all around the world.
